DECISION SCIENCES COLLABORATIVE

SEPTEMBER 2018

DSC Newsletter

Dear Decision Sciences Collaborative,
Ohio State is one of only a handful of institutions to have a dedicated Decision Sciences program. The Decision Sciences Collaborative provides many opportunities for students and faculty to study decision making within their own discipline while reaching across disciplinary boundaries to answer important theoretical and applied questions. Decision-making findings intersect with everyday experience and, thus, can be dismissed as "obvious" (even when the person could not predict its insights ahead of time!). However, decision making is, in fact, a hub science. Within the college of Arts and Sciences, we develop and connect insights from psychology, economics, political science, and communication. Furthermore, we reach across the university into environmental studies, business, medicine, public health, public affairs, law, and related disciplines. Across our diverse subdisciplines, we promote a more comprehensive theoretical as well as practical understanding of human decision making. We are part of the backbone of the sciences because, behind every science and use of science, is somebody making decisions. I hope that you’ll join us this year to learn more about what we do!

This year, we are pleased to continue our small grants program. Past grants have led to presentations, peer-reviewed papers, and federally funded grants. Our next deadline is Monday, October 15 for pilot grants to launch ideas and careers for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. You can find information on how to apply here. Undergraduate small grants applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. More details here.

In addition, I hope that you can join us for our speaker series starting Sunday, September 16 from 3-4pm with Michael Neblo who will talk about “Politics with the People.”

In October, please join us for a workshop on “Fake News” (October 19 with COMPAS) and for a series of eminent speakers across our diverse subfields (Carol Graham, Molly Crockett, Todd Hare, and Drazen Prelec).

For more information, please see our Events page for updates on our upcoming speakers. We have some excellent people coming our way for you!

Best,
Ellen Peters, DSC Director
