Professor and Chair

Phil Smith teaches courses at OSU on cognitive systems engineering, human-computer interaction and the design of distributed work systems.  His research has focused on the use of air traffic flow management, airline operations control, transfusion medicine and military planning to study issues associated with:
  • Design-induced error due to the impacts of brittle technologies on user cognition
  • The design and evaluation of interactive critiquing systems to support medical decision making
  • Intelligent tutoring system
  • Alternative architectures for distributing cognitive work
  • Continuous adaptive planning
