Dear Decision Sciences Collaborative,
As you may have already heard, the DSC has undergone a big change, with me (Ian Krajbich – Psychology & Economics) taking over as Director in the wake of Ellen Peters’s departure. I want to thank Ellen for her years of leadership with the DSC. We will unquestionably miss her. We wish her all the best with her new position as the director of the University of Oregon’s Media Center for Science and Technology. I am very excited for this opportunity to work with you, the members of the DSC, to support and strengthen the decision sciences at Ohio State. We have a remarkable community of researchers here and we need to take advantage of that by building more bridges between our groups around campus. In the coming months I will be working with the DSC Steering Committee to develop new and exciting events to bring our community together and foster collaborations. If you have any ideas, please send them along! In the meantime, the DSC will be continuing with its plan for the year, including fall and spring pilot grant awards, spring research forum, as well as many exciting speakers. Speaking of the Steering Committee, I would like to take a moment to thank Rebecca Reczek (Marketing) who is rotating off of the committee and to welcome Selin Malkoc (Marketing) who is joining it. I also want to welcome Ken Fujita (Psychology) who is replacing me on the committee. They join Jason Coronel (Communication), PJ Healy (Economics), Stephanie Moulton (Public Affairs), and Amanda Robinson (Political Science). Pilot Grants to Launch Ideas and Careers October 15, 2019 is our next deadline for small grants for faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. As always, undergraduate small grants applications also are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. DSC November Speaker – Dr. Alessandro Acquisti Our first event of the academic year is Thursday November 21. Alessandro Acquisti (Carnegie Mellon University) will join us from 4:00 – 5:30pm in Pomerene Hall’s Ideation Lab to give a talk on “Who Benefits from the Data Economy.” The talk will integrate behavioral economics and social media research to explore: 1) the trade-offs associated with privacy protections, 2) the allocation of data economy benefits, and 3) how individual awareness (or not) of such trade-offs and allocations informs decision-making. If you are interested in meeting with Dr. Acquisti that day, please e-mail Ian Krajbich (krajbich.1@osu.edu). Dr. Acquisti’s visit is organized by the Program on Data and Governance at Moritz and co-sponsored by the Department of Economics and the DSC. For more information and updates, please see our Events page.
