Family Decision-Making in the Context of Advanced Disease: A Framework for Research
Medical decision-making has focused, for the most part, on decisions made early in the illness trajectory such as disease screening and early treatment decisions. Much basic and clinical research is yet to be done in the context of advanced disease. Dr. Wells-Di Gregorio and Dr. Porensky will discuss the questionable nature of patient autonomy in decision-making, difficulties with surrogate decision-making, and barriers to effective decision-making for individuals with advanced illness.
Dr. Wells-Di Gregorio is an Assitant Professor in Psychiatry and The Ohio State University. Dr. Porensky is a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Center for Palliative Care and The Ohio State University.
