Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Risk Literacy: Mechanisms, Assessment, and Effective Communication

Risk Literacy is ability to interpret and act on information about risk—an essential skill for decision making in the modern world.  In this talk, we will first review the development of a new assessment of risk literacy, i.e., the Berlin Numeracy Test (www.RiskLiteracy.org).  We then review a series of studies examining associated mechanisms and consequences of these individual differences.  Next, we turn to studies examining the benefits of visual aid for communicating risks to people with lower levels of risk literacy.  We close with discussion of the some of the mechanisms by which visual aids improve risk literacy and decision making.
