2013-02-04 12:10:00 2013-02-04 14:20:00 BDM Colloquium: Edward Cokely & Rocio Garcia-Retamero Risk Literacy: Mechanisms, Assessment, and Effective CommunicationRisk Literacy is ability to interpret and act on information about risk—an essential skill for decision making in the modern world.  In this talk, we will first review the development of a new assessment of risk literacy, i.e., the Berlin Numeracy Test (www.RiskLiteracy.org).  We then review a series of studies examining associated mechanisms and consequences of these individual differences.  Next, we turn to studies examining the benefits of visual aid for communicating risks to people with lower levels of risk literacy.  We close with discussion of the some of the mechanisms by which visual aids improve risk literacy and decision making.Dr. Cokely is Associate Professor of Psychology, Cognitive and Learning Sciences at Michigan Technological University.
