My personal history as an Appalachian from an economically devastated region has led me to deeply question the cyclical disparities in health that are pervasive in communities like my home town. Theories in life course health development and the fetal origins of disease state that these disparities are founded in early life, a notion which I have seen supported continually in my work as a neonatal intensive care nurse specialist. My program of research focuses on understanding and intervening in the early childhood foundations (social, biological, and genetic) of complex disease and developmental delay.
